Ride the Wave – Safe Ride Initiative
Ride the Wave is a community safety initiative launched by Newport Bridge aimed at reducing impaired driving during Newport's St. Patrick's Day Parade.
The concept of Ride the Wave emerged from an analysis of DUI and alcohol-related driving incidents in Newport and throughout Rhode Island. This research revealed a significant increase in incidents during the St. Patrick's Day Parade weekend, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced community safety measures.
In response to these findings, Newport Bridge launched Ride the Wave in 2024, encouraging responsible celebration and providing safer transportation alternatives.
To promote the initiative, ride-share vouchers were introduced as an incentive, motivating individuals to opt for a safe ride home. The objective is to foster a culture of responsible celebration throughout the community — a mission that has already begun to take shape.
Participants can access a ride-share voucher, assisting with transportation costs and making it easier to prioritize safety over getting behind the wheel.

Program Details
Vouchers become active at 9:00 AM on parade day
Available within approximately a 20-mile radius of Newport
One $20 ride voucher per person
Voucher can be used to or from parade-related activities
Rides are limited and available while funding lasts
Community Participation
We encourage local businesses, restaurants, bars, and community members to share this link with friends, patrons, and visitors who may benefit from a safe ride.
